1. LATEST ON PROPOSALS TO RESTRICT ACCESS TO NHS TREATMENTS IN ENFIELD: THERE IS STILL TIME TO HAVE YOUR SAY:

Following complaints about the short consultation period and the lack of clarity in the proposals, the consultation period has now been extended to 31 May.

FLDRA attended one of the consultation meetings, held in Edmonton on 30 March, where many participants questioned the proposals.  There was scepticism about the stated objective of the Enfield Clinical Commissioning Group to benefit patients by not carrying out unnecessary, ineffective or risky treatments.  A number of participants felt that the purpose is to make savings, and there was concern that this may lead to long delays in accessing treatments that can alleviate painful or distressing conditions. The example was given of people with moderate hearing loss who, without access to a hearing aid, may become socially isolated and have difficulty participating in ordinary activities. Participants also queried the proposal to set up an additional layer of decision-makers to screen referrals made by medical practitioners who have met and assessed the patients, and an appeals mechanism that patients would have to use if their referrals were refused by the panel.

To have your say, complete the consultation paper online, request a paper copy, and/or attend one of the meetings below.

6. FAIRER FUNDING FOR ENFIELD CAMPAIGN: WHY DO WE GET LESS FUNDING THAN THE WEALTHIEST BOROUGHS? VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ON 5 and 6 MAY:

The Over 50’s Forum is leading a campaign to challenge the reduction in government funding for Enfield Borough, at a time when we are listed as the12th most deprived borough in London and the one with the highest number of children living in poverty.

After the launch of the campaign in 2016, Monty Meth MBE, President of the Forum, explained:

“Since 2003/04 it is estimated that Enfield has lost some £100 million in “floor damping” given to other councils. Yet we get far less cash per head than many wealthier boroughs and this means our council’s help to community organisations and services is being cut even further.

Enfield receives government funding of £496.10 per head of population while Westminster gets £917.59 per person, Hammersmith and Fulham receives £900 and Kensington and Chelsea £815 – when all the boroughs carry out the same tasks.

Council leader Doug Taylor says we get less funding than we should because the government uses old population data. Funding to support councils in tackling the serious issue of homelessness is 15 years old. We have the fifth worst homelessness problem in the country, yet we only received £555,000 while other boroughs received up to £8million a year.”

The Forum has organised a petition that has cross-political party support and needs lots more signatures.

The Forum needs volunteers prepared to give up a couple of hours of their time and specifically  on Friday 5 May and Saturday 6 May collecting signatures at local shopping centres. No special knowledge is needed – volunteers will be provided with information on the campaign.

Please contact the Forum office on info@enfieldover50sforum.org.uk or 020 8807 2076
